Continuing incrementally formed sheet metal research conducted at Carnegie Mellon University we approached Autodesk with a vision to expand this research and build a compelling structure in their Boston BUILD space. I helped in the facilitation the two week workshop working with a group of ten undergraduate student. The resulting installation puts the practice of incremental metal forming on display, along with creating over head interest beyond the air ducts.
Working with a custom fixture we began testing the extents of robotic metal deformation for this application.
Each pass slowly stretches the material, moving down 1-2 mm each time.
To give rigidity to the thin panels we glued two panels together with a metal channel between.
The final product acts as a center point above a large meeting table, inviting individual curiosity and closer inspection of the process.
