Aqua Pavillion
Aqua Pavilion
2016-17
In a collaboration between storm water engineers, Carnegie Mellon Professors and the community organization Grow Pittsburgh, I led a team of 15 students to design and fabricate a 600 sq ft rainwater collection pavilion.
Located in the Martin Luther King Jr. community garden in Pittsburgh, this pavilion aimed to limit the dependency of the garden of municipal water.
With the goal of creating a compelling design using a minimal budget and simple construction methods we opted for a series of 6x6 wooden posts and a system of variable 2x4 trusses.
Detailed construction drawing were required for municipal approval.
Making use of a custom jig, each member of each truss was cut to unique angles then assembled accordingly.
The resulting pavilion not only feeds rain into the 2,000 gallon cistern allowing the garden to be independent of municipal water, but also provides a space for community gatherings.
